Refrigerator Filters
Refrigerator filters work well because they utilize carbon block filters that have a large amount of surface area. According to manufacturers, one pound of carbon has a surface area of approximately 125 acres. This allows carbon to physically absorb a large amount of contaminants that pose serious dangers to our water supply. Carbon block filters are great when paired with other filtration technology, however falls short when utilized by itself. Many of these contaminants are linked to cancer, neurological problems, and other health risks if ingested over long periods of time.
How Refrigerator Filtration Works
Refrigerators utilize filters made up of activated carbon block. Activated carbon block filters are usually rated by the size of the particles they are able to remove, measured in microns, and generally range from 50 microns (least effective) down to 0.5 microns (most effective).

Ineffective Removal of Many Contaminants
Refrigerator filters vary in effectiveness. If we took the highest quality refrigerator filter it would only be able to filter down to 0.5 microns. Taking a look at the graph on the right, a high quality refrigerator filter only gets rid of some viruses and leaves pesticides, heavy metals and total dissolved solids like chromium 6, fluoride and arsenic in your drinking water, all of which are linked to cancer.

Effective Removal of Some Contaminants
Refrigerator filtration is generally a better option to purify water over pitcher filtration due to the fact that it utilizes a higher quality activated carbon filter that is pulverizd into carbon blocks and has more surface area for water to travel over to absorb contaminants.
Refrigerator filters have very high effectiveness in removing bacteria, but are only moderately effective in removing viruses. They have low effectiveness in removing chemicals and are not effective in removing total dissolved solids and heavy metals.
