Pitcher Filters ARE NOT Intended to Purify Water

Pitcher filters utilize granulated activated carbon filtration, which is an inexpensiveand less effective method to purify water. The filter is made up fine grains of activated carbon, which provide less surface area for water to travel over to absorb contaminants. This method is less effective compared to a carbon block filter used (in higher quality water filters) and is not effective in removing bacteria, viruses, chemicals or heavy metals.

Brita is honest with their fine print on their packaging. They state, "The Brita Pitcher Filter is not intended to purify water. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Individuals requiring water of special microbiological purity should follow the advice of their doctor or local health officials regarding the use and consumption of their tap water and Brita filtered water."
