Bottled Water
Paying for Tap Water
American consumers spent $10.6 billion on bottled water in 2009 and paid up to 1,900 times the cost of tap water. Almost half of all bottled water came from municipal tap water supplies in 2009. A common misconception is that a higher premium paid, would equate to high quality water, but that is not the case.
Less Regulation Leads to Less Purity
Consumers are led to believe that they are buying a product that has been more purified than the water that comes out of their household tap. Since about 50% of all bottled water is just plain tap water (depending where it is sourced) there are just as many, if not more contaminants in bottled water than your household tap. With promotional campaigns saturated with images of mountain springs, and prices up to 1900 times the price of tap water, bottled water is shockingly less regulated than household tap water. Bottled water regulations fall under looser guidelines under the FDA and the bottled water industry is not required to report chemical components in their products.
Contaminants in Bottled Water
There are over 260 contaminants in tap water and about 50% of the time, tap water is bottled for your consumption. Some bottled water companies treat your water with some sort of filtration or disinfection and in extreme cases there is no treatment at all and this bottled water can exceed bacteria levels that wouldn't be acceptable in your tap water.
Contaminants in your bottled water may be the same as those found in your tap water and can potentialy include cancer causing chemicals, heavy metals, and total dissolved soilds.
Packaging Linked to Cancer
The packaging that is used to bottle water utilizes #7 plastic. When #7 plastic is exposed to heat, it breaks down and releases a cancer causing chemical called Bisphenol-A (BPA). BPA is a carcinogen and hormone disruptor linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer and type II diabetes.
Coway Solutions

Coway applies their Reverse Osmosis Technology to all of their water filtration units, which are the most advanced filters removing 99.99% of all contaminants.

Unknown Source and Treatment
A new EWG (Enviormental Working Group) survey of 173 unique bottled water products found many disparities in the manufacturing of bottled water. Overall, 18 percent of bottled waters fail to list the location of their source, and 32 percent disclose nothing about the treatment or purity of the water.
